FAQ

When is a child ready for violin lessons?

This is by far the most frequently asked question about music instruction. Our experience shows that children who function at a 6-year- old level or higher–no matter what age they are– are most likely to have a positive experience in instrumental instruction. A personalized assessment  may reveal that your 4-year-old functions like a 6-year-old (visually, auditorially and socially). Our experience indicates that this child has a good chance of having a positive experience in learning to play an instrument. And remember, A POSITIVE BEGINNING IS A MUST!

What IS a private lesson?

A private lesson is a one-on-one instruction time between teacher and student.

Is the parent allowed to observe?

By all means!  As long as the student is responding to the instructor as well as can be expected,  parents are welcome to attend the lesson; however, when I notice that the child does better without the parent in the room,  I will discuss this with the parent, in order to determine an alternative approach.

When am I open for teaching?

I offer classes Monday through Saturday with teaching hours at the discretion of the instructors– generally between 9AM and 8PM.
For specific schedule availability, you may call me and help us fill out a survey of you or your child’s availability for lessons.

What does the monthly private tuition fee cover? What about the 5th week?

The charges are based on 4  lessons per month.  When the quarterly  5th week occurs, the parents and teacher decide together whether to
1) Use the 5th week as a make up lesson for a previous or forthcoming absence
2) Skip the lesson entirely
3) Pay for the additional lesson

Do you offer private lessons for teenagers or adults who have no previous experience?

Yes! I love to work with beginners of any age, including adults, although I understand they are usually taking lessons for their own enjoyment rather than pleasing their parents. For this reason, teacher expectations may adjust accordingly.

  1. Hi would like to check

Are there anything that i should learn before-hand? I have absolutely no idea how to read music
    scores or anything like that.

    Thanks,
    Shan

    • Hi Shan,

Nope, you don’t need any prior music knowledge if you learn with me 🙂 and you will be able to still play the violin!

      regards

  2. Hi

Please can you indicate where your house is? I live in SIngapore and I am looking for violin lessons close to home for my 4 year old.

    Many thanks

  3. Hi,

What approach do you use with 4 year olds? The traditional way or a suzuki type where parents are wlecomed and encouraged to join in? My 4 year old loves musical instruments and I intend for him to learn for his sheer pleasure (and not for ‘pleasing parents’ as such).
    Thanks.
    Kind Regards

    • Hi sarah,

I use the suzuki method, and for young children, parent/s is a must for all lesson. Not necessary for parents to pick up the instrument, although that will help your child even more, but to sit in and listen to the lesson so that they can guide the child back home while they practise. I hope this helps with your doubts 🙂

      • Hi Wei Han,

        Appreciate the reply.
        Delighted to hear your approach.
Yes, the suzuki method with parents being involved does help.

        Kind Regards,
        Sarah
